The two primary types of politics that have flourished in the United States are the politics of the Democratic Party and the politics of the Republican Party. Democrats tend to be much more liberal than republicans. They promote legislation that supports civil right. Democrats believe that choice is a fundamental right and therefore support a woman’s right to choose. They also oppose of any type of discrimination and seek to eliminate discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Democrats currently control the White House, as well as Congress. There have been many notable and famous democrats that have left their mark on American history.
The well known democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected the 32nd President of the United States. He helped to lead the United States through the second World War, as well as a world wide economic crisis. He served as president during the Great Depression and created the New Deal in order to address the economic issues at hand. He introduced legislation that created new government agencies that opened up job opportunities for unemployed individuals. These legislations allowed many individuals to find work, as well as assisted culture and society to flourish. He was elected to office for four terms and died in the middle of his fourth term. The democrat Woodrow Wilson was elected as the 28th President of the United States. He passed a variety of legislations including the Federal Farm Loan Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, and the Federal Reserve Act. He also persuaded Congress to pass the Revenue Act which established America’s first federal income tax. Democrat Bill Clinton was the 42nd United States President elected to office. His term in office marked the longest period of peace-time in the history of the United States. During his presidency there was a federal surplus of $236 Billion dollars. He was impeached due to obstruction of justice, but when he left office he had a 66% approval rating, which is the highest of any president since World War II. His wife, democrat Hillary Clinton, became the first female to run for a spot in a presidential election, however she lost in the primary election to Senator Barack Obama. Democrat Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States in the 2008 presidential election. He became the first African American to be elected to office. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded President Obama with the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. During his presidency he seeks to reform health care so that all American citizens have access to decent and affordable health care. He also wants to invest in alternative energy sources, provide federal funding to embryonic stem cell research and end the war in Iraq. Notable celebrity democrats include Ashley Judd, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Rock, Helen Hunt and Nicole Kidman, just to name a few.
